The woman aiming to help 75% of Emiratis own their own home by 2021

Zahra-Al-AboodiPlanning and implementing a social housing strategy for an entire country is no easy task. However, this is top of the to-do list for the likes of Zahra Al Aboodi and her colleagues at the UAE’s Ministry of Public Works (MoPW).

Sitting in a boardroom at MoPW headquarters in Dubai, undersecretary Al Aboodi explained that the role of the department with regards to social housing for UAE nationals has two strands. The first involves drawing up a federal housing strategy; the second the delivery of properties through various housing programmes and initiatives.

Al Aboodi, who is number two to the Minister of Public Works, Dr Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, said devising and indeed revising the housing strategy is a continuous process.

“If we talk about housing, we are talking about people,” she said. “The UAE population is growing very fast – around 5 percent annually. So that’s why you have to revise the housing strategy day-by-day because needs change and the socio-economic situation changes.
