The April Lyrids, widely considered one of the world’s oldest known meteor showers, is expected to peak this week tomorrow (Tuesday), April 22.
The showers take place annually from April 16 to April 26, and are named after Lyra, the harp-shaped constellation from which the meteors appear to originate.
According to the Qatar Astronomy Club, residents can observe the April Lyrids shower at nighttime any day this week – provided you head out of the city.
Speaking to Doha News, co-founders Haji T. Mammadov and Jassim Lari said the moon would likely run some interference, but the meteor shower is usually a very visible one. They add: “You have to go to somewhere dark in order to see them above your head directly and all that you need is a comfortable chair to enjoy your time. In good conditions you can expect to see 20 per hour and we recommend any place close to Al Zubara Fort or Al Kharrara.”
