Qatar has already won the rights to host the 2022 FIFA football World Cup and the 2019 World Athletics Championships, but it has set its sights on hosting another high profile sporting event: the basketball World Cup.
Qatar will compete with China, Germany, France, the Philippines and Turkey to host the one of the tournament’s next two editions, in 2019 or 2023, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) confirmed at the weekend, Associated Press reported.
FIBA will choose the winning bids to host the 2019 event in June.
“The commitment to growing basketball as well as to stage first-class sporting events is something they all have in common” FIBA Secretary-General Patrick Baumann said in a statement.
