Muslims from all over the world, or at least those with a satellite hook up, will be able to get an up close and personal view of the life of Omar, Islam’s second Khalifah. According to a recently inked deal, Dubai’s MBC Group will join forces with Qatar’s Public Media Group to produce the biographical series which will hit television screens across the Arab world come next Ramadan. Delivered in Arabic, the series will also contain subtitles in other languages to truly reach as many Muslims as possible.
Producers of the show believe that it will serve as a great source of pride and inspiration for Muslims. After all, the Khalifah Omar was an influential figure in Islamic history following the death of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Muslims from all around the globe hold the four Khalifahs in high esteem and are keen to learn from their biographies to see the ways in which Muslims can rise above all adversity. During the press conference to announce the joint venture, MBC Group Chairman Sheikh Waleed al-Ibrahim said, “We are in dire need, now more than any other time in the past, of imitating such a great character as Caliph Omar and taking it a good model to be followed.” To ensure that the biography is truthfully depicted on screen, a group of Islamic clerics and professors of the Sharia Law will be on set around the clock to review the scripts and oversee filming.
The series will begin to air, next Ramadan. The timing of the release could not be better as the Holy Month of Ramadan is almost always a time in which Muslims in the Arab world get caught up in soap opera styled dramas that dim the meaning of the auspicious season. Having an alternative program to watch, that uplifts the soul during the Holy Month, will be a blessing indeed.
