Last week, we out Sketch Comedy Night at the 7th Annual New York Arab American Comedy Festival here in NYC, produced by some of the most talented comedians in the industry. The 5 day festival included stand-up, sketch comedy, a self-proclaimed “Haram Show,” and, the first ever stand-up show ever to be performed entirely in Arabic.
Over 2,000 people attended the show, making it the most well-attend event of the festival’s seven year history. The festival featured over 50 performers from various parts of the Middle East, and the US and Canada.
We at elan attended “Sketch Comedy Night,” which tackled some of the most hilarious topics in American and Arab pop culture via scripted, Saturday Night Live-type skits. Among other things, the actors poked fun at (no-pun intended) Facebook, “sbelling” bees, Twitter and American television shows such as “Wife Swap” and “Law and Order”.
The festival, co-founded by the talented Dean Obeidallah and Maysoon Zayid, aims to showcase the talents of Arab-American artists in the entertainment industry. “It is our hope that this Festival will challenge, as well as inspire, our fellow Arab-Americans to create outstanding new works of comedy,” said Dean and Maysoon.
And with a Sketch Comedy night with mentions of toilet and fart jokes, I’d say that challenge has been met!
