Often referred to as the pulse of the planet, Twitter has served as a platform for celebrities, journalists, activists, businesses and citizens to voice their opinion, promote their products and even report breaking news in real-time.
In the Middle East, however, Twitter has been often used as an essential tool of communication, mobilization and information.
Serving as a microphone for people to quickly disseminate information, Twitter has become a popular arena in the region for people in conflict zones to let the world know what is happening in their backyard and voice their thoughts, post pictures and videos, both verified and unverified, of what happening on the ground.
“One of the things that social media does is transmission of hope across these countries,” said Rafat Ali, a social media expert and founder of PaidContent.
Going beyond the Arab Spring, the popular platform often sees powerful and vivid tweets from conflict zones in the region where news continues to be fast-paced and difficult to access, gather and source. Recently, we covered 16-year-old Farah Baker’s brave and provocative tweets from Gaza who describes herself as the “modern Anne Frank.”
Meanwhile, many users in and outside Syria including citizens, journalists and activists have taken to live-tweet the US-led air strikes in Syria and the after-effects of the military response that has once again pushed the war-torn country in the spotlight.
Here are a few people you should follow on Twitter to stay informed and keep track of what’s happening in Syria:
