Mammogram-on-Wheels

Ever on the cusp of cutting edge medical technology, the State of Kuwait has recently acquired its’ very own mobile digital mammography unit. It was received with great fan fare at the Kuwait Society for Preventing Smoking and Cancer (KSPSC) offices. According to the Kuwaiti Minister of Health, Dr. Hilal Al-Sayer, the unit will be a regular feature on the Kuwaiti streets as it moves through all six governorates trolling for women who want a breast check-up.

Early diagnosis is the best treatment in the fight against breast cancer. Al-Sayer hopes that the mobile mammography unit will help root out breast cancer and get women affected by the disease the treatment needed to save their lives. At the ribbon cutting ceremony, Al-Sayer shared, “Early discovery is an easy and effective way to increase the likelihood of curing cancer in its first phases. This will also increase a patient’s possibility of getting well and decreasing the load on medical centers as patients will not have to go through long and expensive medical treatment procedures.”

One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer somewhere around the globe each year. In Kuwait, most women lack education regarding basic breast cancer knowledge or are mistrustful of doctors in general. There is also a degree of shame or embarrassment that keeps many Kuwaiti women from having their breasts examined. With the mobile mammography unit, KSPSC hopes to bring the issue of breast cancer into the spotlight and alleviate misconceptions for the sake of women’s health.
