Earlier this year, six photographers from, or connected to, the Gulf region travelled to Turkey from 12 – 23 May 2016. There they collaborated with local photographers and arts initiatives in Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ankara and explored the theme of ‘migration’ under the mentorship of Turkish visual artist, Merve Ünsal. At the end of their time in Turkey, the participants worked with Ankara-based collective Ka Atölye to put on an exhibition of their work and to produce a publication based on this year’s theme. The theme was interpreted literally by some of the artists, thinking about moving bodies from place to place, while others remixed their own cultures and backgrounds to produce new visual languages. The six participating photographers were all previous winners of the Art Jameel Photography Award (AJPA). This work will be shown for the first time outside Turkey at the Naila Art Gallery in Riyadh, alongside the shortlisted photographers of the AJPA 2016. |
