The Afghan National Cricket Team won the Laureus Spirit of Sport Award on Wednesday night at a star-studded event in Kuala Lumpur.

Dr. Noor Mohammad Murad, CEO of Afghanistan cricket board, travelled to Malaysia to receive the award on behalf of Afghan Cricket Team. “We are very proud to receive the Spirit of Sport Award,” Dr. Murad said. “It recognizes the hard work of our players, officials and administrators over the past 12 years in building cricket in our country.”

The Laureus Awards recognize remarkable men and women from the world of sports and their greatest sport achievements.

“We are proud of our national team who deserve this recognition,” Dr. Murad said. “We are working hard to develop better performance and skills in preparation for the 2015 World Cup.”

During the presentation of the Spirit of Sport Award, Laureus recognized the remarkable growth of Afghanistan’s cricket team over the past 12 years. The country went from little to no involvement in the game to competing at an international level.

Laureus also recognized that in a country devastated by war, cricket has emerged as a source of great national pride. The team’s qualification for the 2015 Cricket World Cup, led by coach Kabir Khan and captain Mohammad Nabi, stands as proof of the remarkable growth in the sport. This, Laureus said, is a remarkable success for a country with few turf pitches and just five years ago was playing in World League Division Five.
