English Premier League Forges Partnership With Afghanistan

A cooperation agreement is expected to be signed between the Afghan Football Federation (AFF) and the Britain’s Premiere League in Dubai within two months.

“The contract will officially be signed in January 2014, and the agreement will seek the longstanding cooperation of the FA to Afghanistan’s Football Federation,” AFF Secretary General Ali Reza Aqa Zada said.

This comes at a time that the British Prime Minister David Cameron visited a southern province of Afghanistan and pledged the Premier League’s support for Afghan football. The British football star Michael Owen accompanied Cameron on his trip.

Football in Afghanistan has seen dramatic growth over the years since the Taliban fell. With the starting of the first national professional league – the Roshan Afghanistan Premier League (RAPL) – in 2012 and the South Asian Football Championship victory this year, Afghan football has moved ahead quickly.
