Fed up of having to run for cover to escape the UAE’s baking summer heat, Emirati sisters Aysha and Noura Al Hamiri decided to come up with a solution.
The result, their prototype design for a hands-free personal air-conditioning unit, was one of hundreds of inventions, technological creations and imaginative ideas on display at Innovator 2014 in Abu Dhabi.
“Two weeks ago, I had the idea for this,” said Aysha, 33, who works at Al Ain University. “I don’t like the hot weather, and every time I went outside I wished I had some sort of protection.”
Noura, 23, who studies at Al Ain Women’s College, then helped with the design, which consists of a transparent plastic curtain hanging from an umbrella fitted with a small air-conditioner unit. The umbrella is attached to a backpack so that the wearer is completely cocooned within their own temperature-controlled environment.
“It could be used by anyone,” said Aysha. “It could be very useful for tourists who are not used to the heat, or maybe labourers in the hot weather.”
Innovator 2014 brought together students, tech enthusiasts, Do-it-Yourselfers and designers from across the UAE to show off their creations and share their ideas at the FGB Arena, Zayed Sports City.
