Baksı Museum in the northeastern Turkish province of Bayburt was awarded with the Council of Europe (COE) Museum Prize for 2014 on Tuesday in a ceremony in Strasbourg, the Cihan news agency reported on Wednesday.
Contemporary Turkish artist Hüsamettin Koçan, the founder of the museum, was in attendance at the ceremony in the historic Rohan Palace, where he was presented with a bronze statue of Joan Miro to be displayed in his museum for a year as the symbol of the prize.
Koçan said he hopes the museum will increase the income Bayburt obtains from tourism thanks to this award and added the institution aims at promoting the young talents of Turkey with the scholarship it provides. “Our museum is not only a place showcasing exhibitions, but we are also concerned with the lives of people,” he continued.
